Today i got my samsung captivate! I was excited til i started playing around with it and started losing my battery very quickly. i know i'm supposed to charge it the first time for 6 hours but... this is my first smart phone and i need help figuring out how i can make the battery last longer between charges. I downloaded the task killer app so i won't be multi-tasking but please let me know if there's anything that i missed.  Undecided

Get a 3G killer widget or app as leaving it on is just wasting power.  Then on when needed.  Set display to auto settings.  Get "automatic task killer" from market too,  better then manipulation task killer.  Also if you can then root ya phone and get "auto start manager" it let's get turn off unwanted services

I've got up to 11 hours battery life by switching auto-sync from the accounts menu under settings.

Hi there!

I'm a newby with Samsung Fascinate two days old ( Big Grin). 1st day battery consumption was about 16 hours as I tried to figure out the settings, application, etc. 2nd day or today @ 12am or 4 hours after unplugging the charger, the battery status is 82%!..If with the same momentum of usage..I think tonight, i need to recharge this smartphone again.. Sad (4 hours=20%, 20 hours=100%). As information, this what i'd done:

1)Install advanced Task Killer with 1/2 hour auto-kill
2)Use non-live wallpaper
3)Disable Auto-sync
4)Put phone on idle after 30s
5)Recharge battery once phone battery is drained off totally.
6)Screen Brightness (auto) as recommended or I should put it on minimum?

Any other suggestion or comment? I'm 3g user..

Thank You.

I turned off live wallpaper and that helped quite a bit.

Having had the Samsung Fascinate i9000 since the 13th of July, I am very impressed with this smart phone.
The biggest fault I discovered is the very fast draining of the battery and the occasional screen freeze.
The battery needed to be removed on one occation.
Thurs 29th July for some reason after a 100% recharge, the phone charge lasted 5 hrs 50 minutes from a 100% charge.
Vary Bad. Wasn't able to connect to the internet in that period either.
Recharged to 100% and 12 hours later the battery only showed 40% remaining.
I rang Samsung yesterday and they thought the 5hr drain period was unacceptable, but the other discharge times were standard.

There advertised standby time is calculated when the phone is in flight mode and nothing is running.
He recommended a task killer app, and also an app called APNdroid, which kills all of your internet connections and sync.
Last night found and installed the apps.
I used the apps after a 100% full charge and today 14 hours later the battery showed 96% remaing. A big improvement.
Phone still works on normal phone mode allowing calls and text alarms etc.

To re-connect or sync just use the app button again,  WiFi needed a manual switch on.
I put a shortcuts for both apps on the idle screen one

When you are fully connected, remember Only use 2G not 3g unless really necessary.
3G uses a lot of battery power for some reason.
Have your screen settings to the lowest acceptable level and auto turn of between 30 to 60 seconds
or force turn off with the switch on/off button
The sleeping time for WiFi setting should be, to turn off when screen turns off. This is the better option.
Switching to never seemed to drain the battery continually.
GPS, switch this off unless really required.
Keep you bluetooth off at all times unless required. This is a big battery drainer

I trust this information is some help

*********************************************

Battery Test with everything disabled apart from the normal phone, SMS & MMS functions

The phone was used for the occasional calls

30th Jul 2010    1750   100% charge
31st Jul 2010    0950    97% Charge   After 16hrs
31st Jul 2010    1750    91% Charge   After 24hrs
1st Aug 2010     1145    80% Charge   After 40hrs
1st Aug 2010    1750    78% Charge   After 48hrs

All pretty good with the phone only connected

Sunday 01/08/2010 Clicked the short cut to re connect to the internet and nothing. Showed I was connected
but opening a web page I was informed there was no network connection.
After 90 minutes enough was enough. Battery drained to 65%
I decided to un-install the APNdroid app. I did remember to have the app stating that all was connected again
before the un-install. Reboot of the phone just to be 100% sure and all back to normal.
I can now only hope that the update amy fix some of the battery drainage problems otherwise stuck with it
until another working app can be found.

All I can say is Bugger !

UPDATE

After the android update and having to reinstall most of my apps, fortunately backed up to my SDcard, and thank god for that.
Re-installed the APNdroid app. This time in installed correctly. Switch it on meaning disconnect all of the web data stuff, the phone has now 50% left in the battery after 4 days, that is 48hrs with minimal phone and text use. Switching APNdroid off (and working immediately this time) just to check a few email and maps stuff and sync the calender or email when away from home. Thats a couple of times a day, but immediately switching back on immediatley after use. This is the what to go. By the way, switch of the WiFi, BLUETOOTH, GPS, SYNC, and averything else you can think of, and the battery will last. USING THE INTERNET DATA, GPS, SYNC, WIFI and BLUETOOTH is the KILLER.

+1 - Mind your connectivity. Being new to Android, I always wondered about the little 3G icon blinking in the corner even when I had all my apps set to manual sync! On a hunch I checked my bill online and I was indeed incurring connection charges! APN on/off took care of that and I'm now getting at least 2 days of heavy use.

Well in a land without proper 3G, the EDGE saps out the battery on mine.

I try to keep my tasks in control with some applications that can help with that. I also turn on Sync and Talk when I have good WiFi connectivity.

It also helps if you reboot your phone once in a while, although not logically - just an easy 'refresh' way. Logically you'd control your android services and background data pullers.
