For anyone unsure about the link above here is another one that i have posted several times and seems to be a reliable download. There is an update available to the file in this link since its the 1.5.1.71. file not the most recent update one. You don't have to update it since it seems like there is a bit of trouble going on with connection properly.

http://mytopfiles.com/programs/file/Kies_1-5-1-10071_32/371606.htm

If you are having trouble with connecting to Samsung Kies it would appear that MOST of the tips on other forums on how to fix this is to go from your phones main screen;

application>settings>SD Card & Phone Storage> Unmount Internal SD Card
(MAKE SURE YOU HAVE BACKED UP ANY DATA YOU WANT TO KEEP)

After doing the Unmount, restart the phone and make sure you have Wifi & bluetooth off (not sure if it helps but i had it off when i did my unmounts)

Hopefully once you have performed the unmount and installed Kies the driver for your type of Fascinate Model you will be able to use it, personally i choose to just use the mass storage mode but anyone else can do what they want.

if it seems i left a step out or you get confused, just say so and i can clarify hopefully!

I was really lucky.  I only had to uninstall Kies, reboot then reinstall and it worked.  Yay lol x

Hi, I have also bought the new Samsung Captivate from AT&T. I am a newbie to Android and this my first smartphone, although I am an experienced computer user. I downloaded and installed the latest version of Samsung Kies from the website: Kies_1.5.1.10074_2_6 and installed it on a clean version of Windows (i.e. had no earlier version of Kies installed before this). I am running  the 64bit version of Windows 7 Professional.

After the installation Samsung Kies did not recognize my phone if I set the USB option on the phone to be "Samsung Kies". It is detected by Kies only if I set the option to "Mass Storage" but then Kies complains that I should change the mode to "Samsung Kies" to get full functionality and access.

As advised on the link above, I rebooted my phone and then presto -- when I plugged in the phone and selected "Samsung Kies" the phone was detected and Windows installed some drivers. The phone displays "MTP application" and shows connected. However, the Kies itself program shows "Connecting the Device - Please wait"  and is just stuck there.

Any ideas what is going on?

I really require the ability to sync my contacts and my calendar with Outlook, otherwise I will basically need to return this phone.

OK: I need to do an extra step. I needed to *uninstall* kies, then install the specific driver for my phone. So Step By step what seems to work:

(1) Install the Phone specific drivers from Sansung:

Instructions: http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa/jsp/faqs/faqs_view_us.jsp?SITE_ID=22&PG_ID=2&PROD_SUB_ID=557&PROD_ID=558&AT_ID=304017

Download Location:
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/search/supportSearchModelResult.do?menu=SP01&searchWord=captivate&searchInputBox=captivate#

(2) Install Kies: After installing the Samsung Captivate driver, I re-installed Kies (Kies_1.5.1.10074_2_6).

(3) Prepare phone. As advised by a post earlier, I unmounted the internal SD card, and restarted the phone

(4) Startup Kies and plug in the phone. When asked choose "Samsung Kies" on the phone as the method to connect over USB.

I was able to successfully sync my contacts from Outlook.

**UNFORTUNATELY** when I tried to sync the phone calendar with outlook, I ran into issues. It connected for the first time but most of the recurring appointments, appointments with specific categories etc were not synced. I opened some of the appointments, and saved them again in Outlook to see if that made any difference. However when I synced again, Kies put  some of the edited appointments on the phone but DELETED them from OUTLOOK! That just sucks. Need to figure out how to safely sync the calendar from Outlook.
Anyone with any luck or experience with this please shed some light.

Have you tried syncing with the Google calendar instead? I know it supports outlook syncing, so if you can get them to sync you might just have a work around for those issues you are having. We needs more people to test the step by steps guides posted here so we can confirm if they are absolute fixes or just flukes....

Well, not sure anymore. Right now my phone is not recognized by Kies when I put it in "Samsung Kies" Mode. Tried turning off the Bluetooth and WiFi. When I plug in, I do get a popup on the phone asking for a choice, but if I choose Samsung Keis the software on the PC (kies) does not detect the phone.

Finally, when I unmounted the internal SD card, and rebooted the phone I was able to get Kies to recognize my phone in "Samsung Kies" Mode.  It would be super annoying if I have to do this everytime I have to connect my phone to Kies.

Another wierd thing when synchronizing calendars with Outlook 2010. Once I deleted all the calendars on the phone and clicked "Outlook Sync" in Kies it was able to finally update the phone with my calendars. However if I clicked on "Outlook Sync" another time, Kies claimed that 50% of the contacts on my phone have been deleted and  if I continued it would delete the events from my Outlook calendar as well. This is really buggy!

Quite annoying I must say of Samsung to release untested software.

I dont want to use the google candar sync (is that what you meant?) since I dont want all my data to be hosted on google servers. Trying to avoid it if I can.

Unfortunately, I don't know any other methods or workarounds for this problem, hopefully someone does or Samsung releases an update again to correct all these Kies problems, i agree with having a problem with untested software, but maybe it was tested and we just don't have the proper tech knowledge as a collective to get an error free run...
