The Android OS on the Samsung Fascinate allows you to turn any music you’ve copied to the smartphone into ringtones. Here’s how.

1. Open the Music app.

2. Navigate to the music track you wish to use.

3. Hold your finger down on the track for about 2-3 seconds until a menu appears.

4. Tap Use as phone ringtone.

Alternately, you could download and install the RingDroid app from the Android Market. It will allow you to clip songs up into shorter ringtones.

It's actually "set as" and not "use as phone ringtone" then, of course you can set it as ringtone but you can't actually make your own and chose which area of the song you want. RingDroid is actual ringtone customization.

I like to use a program called Audacity. It's free, http://audacity.sourceforge.net/. I like it because you can turn your music into ringtones while it's still on your computer, and then just put them into a ringtones folder on your phone.

I agree with using Audacity. I have been a fan for about 5 years and I can store all my ringtones in a folder and always have them for when I need a backup. I even just make ringtones when I get bored, lol. I store most in my 4shared folder.

That's great, but how do I assign mp3 ringtones to contacts?  Every time I try to assign a specific mp3 ringtone to a specific contact, all I have to choose from are the default ringtones on the phone.  I want to use cumstom mp3's for all of my contacts.

To make a ringtone for a single contact you either have to choose caller ringtone in your settings, and pick the user or users you want to have that ringtone or choose the options for the specific contact. The former is the most common. Just tinker around with your sound and contact options and you should be able to figure this out.

I always use http://www.Ringer.org to make free ringtones for my iPhone. It's completely free and easy.
