2 quick questions re: texting and wifi

hello - couple of questions since this phone is brand new and i havent had a chance to glance at the booklet.  ive done everything i could - you guys seem helpful.

when im texting a box comes up with possible choices of the word all of a sudden.  i dont believe i changed the setting and now ive unchecked several bozes and it still appears.

also, why is it that when i try to connect the phone to an open wifi at my house, my bf's house, etc - it will not recognize it and the phone just says loading...???
