I'm not responsible for your cause.  Try this at your own risk.  This applies only on Verizon Fascinate with DL09 Baseband.  Other variants will be bricked. By rooting your phone, your warranty will be voided.

On your SD Card(format it before proceed), you should have
1. update.zip file: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7223192/RootSF/update.zip
2. su-2.3.6.1+busybox1.19.zip file: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7223192/RootSF/su-2.3.6.1%2Bbusybox1.19.zip
3. DL09 Rom of your choice

On your PC, you should have
1. Installed Samsung Driver
a) For 32bit window: http://www.wikifilez.com/root%20files/epic4g/SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_x86.exe
b) For 64bit window: http://www.wikifilez.com/root%20files/epic4g/usb_drivers_GalaxyS_x64.zip
2. Odin3 v1.3: https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B0VDY-BSyJuQYTdlZGI1NjYtMjg1MC00NGY2LTllOGQtZDU2ZDU0ZDQ3ZWJh&sort=name&layout=list&num=50
3. CWMRecovery_DJ05_DL09.tar.md5 file: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7223192/RootSF/CWMRecovery_DJ05_DL09.tar.md5

Read Before Proceed!!!

The instructions of how to do the:
1. Manual recovery mode: Disconnect USB Data cable from your phone and turn it off completely-> hold both volumes, press and release power button while holding them(if you're going to main screen, you have to do it over). volume to go up and down, power button to execute, and menu button to go to previous option.  To ditch blue factory recovery mode, always select "apply sd card update zip" and use home softkey to execute. This will take you to green. Use home softkey to execute only in blue.  Other recovery screens, use power button.
2. Download mode for odin flash: Disconnect USB Data cable from your phone, turn it off, and take battery out-> open odin-> press volume down while plugging into pc-> make sure port is lighted yellow; if not your phone is not recognized, plug it out and do not proceed....you need to install samsung driver on your pc)

Flashing CWM Recovery and Rooting

1) Open odin, turn off your phone, take battery out, and prepare download mode.  Make sure your phone is highlited yellow under ID:COM port.  If not, unplug USB from your phone, re-install Samsung Driver, and try again.
2) Select PDA, open CWMRecovery_DJ05_DL09.tar.md5, and click start.  Wait until your phone is completely off.
3) Place the battery back into your phone, but don't power up yet.  If you accidently restarted your phone, you might need to reflash CWM Recovery by repeating #1 and #2.  Manually open recovery, and ditch blue (as indicated above) to green recovery.  Select install from sd card-> choose zip from sd card-> select and install 'su-2.3.6.1+busybox1.19.zip' file-> restart the system

Installing DL09 Rom Instruction

1. Reflashing CWMRecovery
a) Problems:#1. Rom Manager cannot roll update.zip in stock DL09; #2. DL09 Rom has to be installed using green recovery not in Rom Manager......this will leave cache trace; #3. until DL09 Custom Rom is installed, CWMRecovery package needs to be odin flashed everytime to access CWM Recovery.
b) Turn off your phone-> open odin-> prepare download mode-> reflash CWMRecovery_DJ05_DL09.tar.md5 file.  After odin flashing the file, place the battery back in and do not power up.
2. Installing DL09 Rom in CWMRecovery
a) Open recovery mode manually(if you accidently restarted your phone, you need to go back to #1 and reflash CWMRecovery)-> ditch blue to green recovery-> select install from sd card  -> select choose from zip-> select DL09 rom and install it.  Your phone will reboot upon completion.  When you get to main screen, turn off your phone again and open recovery manually;if the rom has built-in power mode, use it.  Ditch blue to green recovery (as indicated above).
3. Wiping Cache
a) advanced-> wipe dalvik cache-> select and wipe dalvik cache
b) advanced-> wipe battery stats-> select and wipe battery stats
c) wipe cache from partition-> select and wipe cache
d) restart the system
4. Re-install DL09 Rom in Rom Manager
a) Update.zip should be now working through Rom Manager.  You will need to reinstall your rom through Rom manager, because cahce trace has been followed.
b) open Rom Manager-> press menu softkey-> clear downloaded cache-> select install from SD Card under Rom Manager Option-> find your DL09 rom and select-> uncheck on backup, check on wipe data, and click ok.

I'm in need of assistance. I followed your instructions to the letter and I get the following error when I try to use Rom Manager to install a Rom or just boot to recovery.

-- Install from package...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to seek in /cache/update.zip (invalid argument)
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted

Any suggestions?

I forgot to mention that if I manually select "apply sdcard :update.zip" from the blue recovery (which is still displayed at the top of the screen) it will continue in CWMRecovery and seems to complete correctly.

Rom manager can't roll update.zip....... in other words, it won't work in stock DL09.  you need to install DL09 rom in green CWMRecovery.

I'll apologize up front for being such a "newbie" but I upgraded to Android 2.2 and now my Fascinate doesn't work well with my car (Bluetooth).  I need to downgrade to Android 2.1 (it worked fine then).

I've seen a lot of sites as well as YouTube videos with instructions on how to root the phone.  The problem I'm having is that some of the instructions/videos are out of date; don't show where to get files, etc.  Even in this post there are several messages from June Reactor and I start to get lost on what I'm supposed to follow.

Is there an up to date set of "step-by-step" (dummy proof) instructions/video on how to root the Fascinate?  I’m not sure if I have DL09 Baseline and I'm not sure how to find it.

Also, I backed up my contacts to the SD card.  Can I back up text messages and/or apps to the SD card?  I can't seem to figure out how to back up my picture but Verizon said that the pictures are automatically saved on the SD card.  Is that true?

Thanks,
Matt

I'm sorry but I am starting to believe that you cannot root a Verizon Fascinate. I have tried multiple methods and it doesn't work. The last guy on this thread has the same problem I have and no one has addressed his post. I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but the advice here leaves something to be desired. When you tell us to install using green recovery, what does that mean, how do we do that?

Mine is rooted perfectly fine. My honest advice is if you don't understand what any of this means, don't attempt it. You could easily turn your phone into nothing more than a paper weight.
