Greetings.  I had this problem and went through all the forums and advice about formatting cards, resetting to factory defaults, etc.  In my case, I discovered that the problem was an invalid filename created by Foursquare.  In the /foursquare/cache folder there was a filename that clearly should have had a .jpg extension, but did not, resulting in a filetype of something like ".%FFIEJ2_VS%20"

Deleting that file fixed the problem.  My hypothesis is that the MTP application scans the SD cards for files, looking at file types, and when it comes across that nasty filetype, it crashes... restarts... crashes... forever.

My suggestion is to look into your SD card files (start with Foursquare!) and see if you have any unusual file extensions.  Removing those may resolve your problem.

Before i read youre solution michaelames ive posted a different solution in this tread: http://www.samsungfascinateforum.com/samsung-fascinate-how-to/can't-connect-to-kies/120/ (read it below)

Now i see why it worked Happy

Thx michaelames!

My post:
I saw this solution somewhere (maybe here!?) and it did work for me

1. Backup youre media (Photos movies etc) Use bluetooth or USB, whatever works for you because all youre media will be erased. (Contacts, applications and sms will remain on phone. Some apps store data on sd-card though. Please dont blame me if you loose something important.
2. Press menu button and select "settings". Then go to "sd-card and phone memory"
3. Choose "uninstall sd-card" then "Format sd-card"
4. Restart youre phone

Before you connect it to the computer uninstall any previus versions of KIES and Samsung USB driver. Then install latest version of kies which you will find on samsung.com support pages.

Restart computer. Start Kies and let it load. Connect youre phone.

Thats it.

Im from sweden so ive got got swedish lang on my phone so mayby the menus and setting pages got other names than them i suggested above but im sure you will figure it out. Hope i can help someone out there.

Hello everyone, I'm new here and own a Fascinate now for two weeks. Yesterday I to noticed/encountered the rebooting mtp application when plugging in the cable while the USB settings are set to 'connect to Kies'.

To be short I tried all offered solutions found on this topic on the web and in the end only the unmounting and formatting of the INTERNAL sd has helpt.

I made a backup via Websharing since selecting the 'mass storage' option didn't work for me yesterday. Obviously this is a slow way to make a backup. Try to only back-up what you deem to be imported files.

So the unmounting - formatting and rebooting (mounting) of the INTERNAL cards is the quickest solution and will safe you hours of work!

HOWEVER
Today I had the same rebooting MTP issue again. But since re-installing kies version 1.5.1.10083 I'm able to connect to the pc via 'Mass Storage'
You will see drive F: and drive G: if you at least succeed in connecting via the mass storage option.

I than did 2 things:

1.
I recently made some pictures and also copied some pictures from my pc to the G: drive ( INTERNAL SD) I renamed the pictures to short names so they didn't exceed 16 characters (one of the solutions I read online ).

2.
In the map data I found folders with the names of in my case Touiteur and Beautiful Widgets. Both folders contain a CACHE folder. I deleted the complete touiteur folder and thus also its CACHE folder.

Now I connected my Fascinate to the usb cable again and behold, the rebooting of the MTP has stopped!

Now I'm not technical at all and have struggled with this issue the whole of yesterday ending up formatting my internal SD. And to be honest I don't know for sure what the working solution is in the end but can narrow it down to 2 things you may try if you can connect via the 'mass storage' option:

1. try giving pictures in G:\DCIM\folder name a short name if they are long or try to remove the pictures completely (make backup) just to see if either of this works.

2. Delete the CACHE folders in the APP folder under G:\data and see if this works

Again, I'm unsure what or why I solved it on my Fascinate but give it a try if you have tried everthing else and do not want to format your INTERNAL SD

Hi all -- as michaelames suggested, this does seem to have something to do with the way the phone scans the SD cards when running the MTP application.  It seems that a lot of applications use a similar cache (as dsmit1977 mentioned) that for whatever reason messes things up (long names? weird file types?).  I managed to fix the issue without ever having to back up or format my cards.

The culprit app (for instance, SoundHound) will create its own data folder in /sdcard/ (on the Captivate anyway) which for whatever reason conflicts with the MTP App.  Simply deleting the /sdcard/soundhound/cache/ folder fixed the issue just like that.  With the numerous apps I've tried, there has been no real harm in just deleting the whole /sdcard/[insert app name here]/ folder, as it won't delete the application itself, only things like search history, etc.

It is definitely pretty annoying that I lose my history of (for instance) songs I've looked up and have to delete a bunch of folders every time I want to connect my phone to the computer, but it seems to work.

As for the person who has the MTP App but the phone isn't recognized, try uninstalling Kies, the Samsung USB Drivers, and doing a Windows system restore to a date before when you first installed Kies or tried to plug in the phone.  I had Kies working on one computer, but coming up as "unknown device" on the other.  Also check out this thread: http://www.samsungfascinateforum.com/samsung-fascinate-how-to/can%27t-connect-to-kies/

Hope any of this helps!

@smoj

Thank you for providing your feedback on this issue. Now that you confirm that indeed deleting  the folder on the internal SD cards containing the application name and cache file also has solved this issue for you it seems that this must be the easiest fix! I just wish I would have found your feedback earlier but I'm sure there are a lot of folks out there that will be happy to know this!

And with regards to the device not being recognised by Kies, I had this issue before also but it also has been solved without doing a windows system restore.
For me it's now working fine with Kies version 1.5.1.1.003 and Samsung USB Driver For Mobile phone 1.3.450.0 (not the latest driver I'm aware). Try this combination of Kies and driver version and it may work fine. Kies you obtain from the samsung website and just google for the driver.

Thanks again Smoj. I think although still a bit annoying we have the best ( read easiest ) fix for the rebooting issue up till now that will help a lot of Kies users.

The fix was indeed one of the cache folders of one app (don't know which, just deleted a bunch). This is still basically a MTP software bug by Samsung (or Google) though. They should either have better programmed not to crash during and encounter with a file it doesn't like, or not to scan unnecessary files at all. It's beyond my why they didn't fix this a long time ago, as the creation of cache files is probably a well documented coding practice for the past years.

# NOTE: this has nothing to do with your PC, your drivers, The OS, KIES, or anything else but your Samsung device and the Android running on it. This is a SAMSUNG / Android problem / Bug. I've tried this on XP, Vista, Windows 7 x32 AND Windows 7 x64, and the Samsung Fascinate i9000 performed the same way on all those no matter what I did with the PC, Programs etc.

SOLUTION:  just format the *internal* SD card and you're OK:

1. Copy all DCIM/Photos to External SD Card or send them by email or back tem up via Bluetooth or use a backup program to back it up to your external SD Card
2. Unmount and remove your external SD Card
3. Unmount and format the internal SD Card
4. install your External SD card again

poof!  Your done!   No apps harmed.

I still suggest starting with clearing some cache folders. This is a proven method.

While the formatting of the internal SD card is also proven, if you have ringtones on your internal SD card (I assigned a bunch of them), you have to re-assign all of them again after you copy the files back (*kching* there goes another wasted full hour, as every contact almost gets its own ringtone).

So trying to clear cache folders is worth a try first !

I had the same problem.  HUH?
It was working last week. Over the weekend I had downloaded a few apps.
Plugged in the usb today , and yes back to the flashing mtp can't connect bullshit.

I cleaned my cache on my sd card.....

Then I removed soundhound (although I liked that app)

All works fine again.  Big Grin

While I am not a Fascinate owner (Captivate), I am having the same problem.  I thought I narrowed down the problem to file-names with tilde (found it in FeedR folder).  After I deleted it, MTP stopped flashing but the PC wouldn't see it.  So I rebooted the phone and again MTP flashed.

So I went down the road discussed here and found/deleted *EVERY* cache folder, with no luck.

I really hate the idea of having to erase everything in the sdcard folder.

I still suggest starting with clearing some cache folders. This is a proven method.

Can you try un-mounting both your internal & external SD Cards then connect to Kies again?

Finally got it.  Did some more deleting (had an app that stored all its data in /sdcard - lots (500+) small, html files.

Now I can connect to Kies.  Still no upgrade to Froyo yet, darn!  They said by November Crying
