Forget Kies, use 'mass storage mode'.
Unmount the INTERNAL memory, re-mount it then connect the USB cable.

When I first bought my phone two weeks back, I couldn't connect my Samsung Fascinate to Kies too.  It did not recognize my phone and kept trying to connect.

Brought it to the Samsung repair centre in Plaza Singapura and after several attempts, the technician replaced the driver software on my phone and all's well now.

I'm using Windows 7 Home Edition and Kies version 1.5.1...

Hope this helps.

So are you saying that you're able to sync to Outlook now?

Sorry for the double post, but I thought a bump might be useful for anyone following this topic.

Update: After trying last night what the other two gentlemen have described above, I finally managed to get my phone connected to Kies. (Disclaimer: I'm not sure the solution lay in what they did; will explain later.) Here are the steps I took -

1. Connected my phone to the PC.
2. Selected "Mass storage" mode and mounted my SD card on the phone.
3. Uninstalled the phone and card devices from my PC in Device Manager.
4. Disconnected phone.
5. Uninstalled Kies.
6. Deleted the folder C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{D6CD26FD-CD7F-4C86-96A3-EEBFABE5FE47}
7. Restarted PC.
8. Reinstalled Kies (the same version as the one I installed before - v1.5.1.10062_7, which is the latest one available from Samsung's website).
9. Connected phone again.
10. Selected "Mass storage" mode and mounted my SD card on the phone.

Magically, Kies started up on its own and recognised my phone. I then updated Kies via its native "Firmware Upgrade" option: its latest version is now v1.5.1.10062_42.

Actually I'm not sure if any of the above was what "fixed" the problem. Why? Because when I connect my phone and select any other option apart from "Mass storage" (ie "Media Player", "PC Internet" or - get this - even "Samsung Kies") Kies still refuses to recognise that my phone is connected. Not choosing "Mass storage" mode inadvertently causes the tray popups: "Found New Hardware - MTP Device" and, subsequently, "A problem occurred during hardware installation. Your new hardware might not work properly."

Previously I had always selected "Samsung Kies" on my phone in an effort to try and connect. Maybe simply selecting "Mass storage" mode instead would have worked. If you're having problems connecting I suggest doing the latter first, and if it doesn't work then use the steps I outlined above.

I think the key issue is that only "Mass storage" mode allows you to mount your SD card, which then allows Kies to read it.

Anyway Kies is pretty useless in its current version for Fascinate users, because key Kies functions - Samsung Apps, Phone Book, Calendar, Message Viewer and Memo - are all not supported for the Fascinate! Shocked These functions were the reason I wanted to connect to Kies in the first place! Angry

I figure Samsung will upgrade Kies once the Fascinate is ready to roll out in other markets, but til then if you want to backup your contacts, etc you'll only be able to sync with, say, Gmail. Undecided

Oh well... hope this helps anyone with trouble.

I'm going to try to follow these same steps, but not do the upgrade.

Hi

Hope this can help..

I am facing the same problem of sync to outlook. Today, i sent my phone down to Plaza Sing samsung service center. Told them the problems, after checking my phone firmware.. They said is an old one, thus update to the latest version was done.
During collection of phone, spoke to a Technical engineer about the problem. He told me phone was first sold with the early version of firmware(think he meant to singtel). When the new Kies software was up at samsung web site for downloading, it suppose to be used with the latest firmware. And there is a firmware function in Kies software to allow the phone be updated to the lastest version. But since most of us are having problems with connecting our phone to Kies, thus the firmware update cannot be perform. My suggestion is to take the trouble and go down to samsung service center to have it updated. I am now able to sync all my contacts with Outlooks

With that said, what is the firmware version on your phone now?  Does that mean we're all at Firmware Version: 2.1-update1?

Anyone else?

I just flashed mine to:

Firmware: 2.1-update1

Baseband: I90000XXJF5

Kernel: 2.6.29 root@SE-S602 #2

Still can't connect!  Well I guess I should specify.  I can connect to the Kies, it sees the the drives, but it gives me the following.  (See attachment)  I'm starting to wonder if it's Windows 7 64 bit.

What worked for me is that:

1: Go to settings and choose, choose where to connect when plugged to usb.

2: reboot

3: connect it to pc, and choose mass storage

4: Then you should see F: pop up on Kies.

5: Go to your phone slide the wifi, bluetooth thingy down and click on the USB to mount it

6: enjoy, hope it helped

Hi, I'm a new Fascinate user with the same problem - Kies doesn't see the phone and the PC (Vista) cycles through installing MTP device constantly.

Have I got this right?  Connecting the phone as mass storage allows Vista and Kies to see the device for manually transferring files, but the various clever Kies functions will not work with the Fascinate (yet?).

Certainly, I am fine transferring files manually connected as mass storage but cannot connect directly to Kies.

Before I waste any more time, can anyone confirm that I shoudl give up with the direct conneciton in Kies mode?

Many thanks

I'm sorry, I'm kinda' a stickler when it come to posting in the forums.  The more concise you make the post, the easier it is for someone to get the info without having to ask you a million questions.  Just want to help out a bit more.

What worked for me is that:

1: On your Fascinate go to: Settings/About phone/USB settings and choose how you want the Fascinate to connect when plugged into a PC (or Mac) via USB.  (I choose "Ask on connection" so I have the option once the Fascinate is plugged into the computer, but I think rescawen is saying to choose "Mass storage".)

2: Reboot your Fascinate.  (Not the PC.)

3: Connect your Fascinate to the computer and select "Mass storage" in your list, or it will do it automatically if you set it that way in your USB settings.

4: Then you should see F: pop up on Kies.  (This could also be a different drive letter depending on how your computer system is set up.)

5: At the top of your screen, use the slide down menu that reveals the WiFi/Bluetooth, etc. options.  Select USB and then select mount.  You can also get here be going to: Settings/SD card and phone storage, and then mount.

6: enjoy, hope it helped

Did I get it right rescawen?

SRUnderwood,

When I first started to try to connect I had this problem too, where MTP screen kept flashing like that.  I think I ended up uninstalling the Kies software, and then doing a battery pull on the phone and it connected finally.  It stopped the flashing.  But as myself and the others have posted, the software ID's the phone as the i9000 but says it doesn't support it.  (See my screen grab).

Has anyone heard of Android-sync?  I've read some reviews online and people seem to be happy with it.  I'm going to start doing my due diligence on it today.  I installed it late last night and started to poke away at it, but to no avail as yet.  I got the driver installed and went to sync, t only sync'd for like 10 seconds and said it was done, but nothing transferred.  I was dead tired at that point so I went to sleep.

If I get it going I will surely let you know.  Read up on it though, apparently it does tasks and everything.  Wish I could find some video of it in action.

Yes pretty much, thanks I'm new to android and forgot the correct words for number 4: I should add that kies should recognize the phone, but you can't access or move any files. Then when you mount it should work, and no OS doesn't matter here IMO, it must be settings or phone.

So I'm clear though, are you saying you're able to sync your Outlook contacts/calendar/notes to the Fascinate now?
