Was fine using earlier version of Kies (think it was 1.5.1.10056, before samsungmobile.com.sg release the software support page for Fascinate)

Subsequently, installed the later version 1.5.1.10062_7 from the Fascinate page...

Now it kept having problem to connect with my Fascinate. couldn't install the Samsung Android USB modem and the MTP driver...

My lappie is running on a 32 bit Windows 7 Ultimate OS.

I'm having the same problem. v1.5.1.10062_7 is the first and only version of Kies I've installed. Running Windows XP Pro 2002 with service pack 3.

  • When I connect by phone via cable the tray notification bubble pops up:
    • "Found New Hardware
       MTP Device"
  • Kies will show:
    • "Connecting the device...
      Please wait"
  • After a few minutes I get a notification:
    • "A problem occurred during hardware installation. Your new hardware might not work properly."

When I try to access mass storage mode the device shows up on Kies with Internal Memory in drive F and External Memory in Drive E (I bought and inserted a 16GB Kingston Micro SD card). But when I click on either in Kies a pop-up shows: "Drive is not ready." I'll keep trying for a while then Kies will auto shutdown: "MainStage has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I can't access either drive via My Computer either.

Any information / assistance on this would be much appreciated.

    Update 1:
Woah, just as soon as I finished typing the message above and disconnected my phone from my laptop, it died on me. I was accessing Samsung Apps which was loading when the screen suddenly blacked out then the whole phone became unresponsive; using the power button had no effect whatsoever. Had to do a batt pull.

This is my first time using a Samsung phone, and frankly I'm a bit worried...

    Update 2:
Attempted Driver Recovery via Kies but no luck. PC still won't recognise my device.

Looks like I have to wait for a newer version of Kies..?

Good luck alvin. I take it you have to uninstall Kies first before deleting those files? Let me know how it goes...

    Aye.. Attempt failed..

Followed the same instructions over and over again..

Can't work.. MTP USB Device driver refuse to start... (I tried updating, system told me it's up to date)

Installing of the Samsung Android USB composite modem driver returned mixed results.. sometimes it gets installed... but when i re-connect (note: there isn't a single time when the Kies actually connects to my Fascinate, I assumed installed from the indication in the tray icon by the OS)

*sigh*  ... still can't get it to work..

That's bad. Are you able to revert to the older version of Kies?

    Nope.. without much success...

In fact, I tried 3 versions to test... all failed.

I begin to suspect if it's Windows 7 Ultimate's compatibility with Kies and the drivers...

    My case was pretty weird...
I got my phone on 3rd of June, before Samsung's Site had the support page for Fascinate.
So I went to download Kies from another phone's support (I tink it's SPICA's)

It was ok for a while, i got my contacts and outlook calendars sync-ed..

When I was back 1 week later after my ICT, I saw that Fascinate itself has it's own Kies release. So I reinstall the newer version, and can't connect ever since..

prob is.. I was suspecting some registry changes etc.. so while trying to remedying the connection prob.. I even went to the extent of doing a system restore on my laptop..

Results => STILL A FAILED ATTEMPT... simply can't connect ever since. and now, i can't get the JF4 firmware update. mine's JE. hahaz..

Well I'm using XP so if it's a compatibility problem, it definitely isn't limited to 7. Anyway the fact that you managed to get it working with SPICA's version maybe rules that out.

    Hello All,

I too have the same problem, not able to connect my Fascinate to Kies.

I did installed a previous version (can not remember the version number) of Kies. And then I did upgraded to the current version of 1.5.1.10062_7. And I was never able to connect to Kies again, not once.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the Kies program does not work either.

So I tried to uninstall the Samsung drivers as well. (Control Panel -> System -> Device manager). Followed by uninstalling Kies.

I rebooted the system, and reinstall Kies, and plug in my Fascinate. The Samsung drivers (new drivers?) was automatically installed and Fascinate get connected to Kies with no problem.

What I guess happened here was that as Kies get upgraded (uninstalled old version and install new version) the Samsung drivers was not upgraded with it, the old drivers may not be compatible with the new Kies. This is just my guess.

As for using Fascinate as Mass Storage, after pluging in Fascinate and selecting "Mass Storage", the phone storage have to be "mount"ed before Windows can access to the contents of the drives.

    Look at http://forums.doubletwist.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=1739 #4 post

Hope all of you have a wonderful time with your Fascinate :-)

Hmm...your situation is like alvin's in the sense that you both installed an older version of kies that previously worked. I'm not sure if your method will work for me though I guess there's no harm in trying...

But what do you mean by rebooting your system?

I tink gundam533d meant he rebooted his PC after uninstalling his Kies, before installing it again in his attempt to get the connection work.

@gundam533d I know we can access the phone via mounting the drives, but I still wanna try to get the software working with the phone... doesn't make sense for such a cool phone to be let down by the software supposedly to enhance the user experience. =)

@mlj hahaz.. good luck trying! i kinda gave up... lolz, No one seems to be able to provide a solution for now...

Gundam did say that he managed to get his phone connected to Kies. Seems like the critical step was in unistalling the Samsung drivers first.

I hope that works, because I'm on my company PC which I am defintely not going to reboot...

Anyway thanks for helping me figure out the mass storage problem. I've never had to take the additional step of mounting my phone when connecting to the PC with other brands. And I'd just like to point out that this information is not in the user manual.

Sorry for the double post, but I thought a bump might be useful for anyone following this topic.

Update: After trying last night what the other two gentlemen have described above, I finally managed to get my phone connected to Kies. (Disclaimer: I'm not sure the solution lay in what they did; will explain later.) Here are the steps I took -

    1. Connected my phone to the PC.
    2. Selected "Mass storage" mode and mounted my SD card on the phone.
    3. Uninstalled the phone and card devices from my PC in Device Manager.
    4. Disconnected phone.
    5. Uninstalled Kies.
    6. Deleted the folder C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{D6CD26FD-CD7F-4C86-96A3-EEBFABE5FE47}
    7. Restarted PC.
    8. Reinstalled Kies (the same version as the one I installed before - v1.5.1.10062_7, which is the latest one available from Samsung's website).
    9. Connected phone again.
    10. Selected "Mass storage" mode and mounted my SD card on the phone.

Magically, Kies started up on its own and recognised my phone. I then updated Kies via its native "Firmware Upgrade" option: its latest version is now v1.5.1.10062_42.

Actually I'm not sure if any of the above was what "fixed" the problem. Why? Because when I connect my phone and select any other option apart from "Mass storage" (ie "Media Player", "PC Internet" or - get this - even "Samsung Kies") Kies still refuses to recognise that my phone is connected. Not choosing "Mass storage" mode inadvertently causes the tray popups: "Found New Hardware - MTP Device" and, subsequently, "A problem occurred during hardware installation. Your new hardware might not work properly."

Previously I had always selected "Samsung Kies" on my phone in an effort to try and connect. Maybe simply selecting "Mass storage" mode instead would have worked. If you're having problems connecting I suggest doing the latter first, and if it doesn't work then use the steps I outlined above.

I think the key issue is that only "Mass storage" mode allows you to mount your SD card, which then allows Kies to read it.

Anyway Kies is pretty useless in its current version for Fascinate users, because key Kies functions - Samsung Apps, Phone Book, Calendar, Message Viewer and Memo - are all not supported for the Fascinate! Shocked These functions were the reason I wanted to connect to Kies in the first place! Angry

I figure Samsung will upgrade Kies once the Fascinate is ready to roll out in other markets, but til then if you want to backup your contacts, etc you'll only be able to sync with, say, Gmail. Undecided

Oh well... hope this helps anyone with trouble.

When I first bought my phone two weeks back, I couldn't connect my Samsung Fascinate to Kies too.  It did not recognize my phone and kept trying to connect.

Brought it to the Samsung repair centre in Plaza Singapura and after several attempts, the technician replaced the driver software on my phone and all's well now.

I'm using Windows 7 Home Edition and Kies version 1.5.1...

    Hope this helps.

Thanks mlj for trying to provide a solution... Actually, I'm well aware that by choosing MAss Storage, Kies is able to detect the 2 memories (inclusive of ext micro sd) of Fascinate.

However, the concern here is actually getting the Samsung Kies option to work, which it previously did. Only in Samsung Kies option will all those widgets work. I'd managed to connect the phone the first time round.. and found it quite convenient to have a PC suite to use with the phone... Managed to sync my outlook calendar and google calendar on my phone etc. So I found it very useful.

But it seems that a lot of people are having problem in getting their PC to detect and install the MTP USB Device driver... no signs of the driver online as well.. I kinda give up... waiting for the phone to launch globally, maybe the other UK or US counterparts might have a solution for this.

    Cheers,
    @Lvin
