I called Samsung Support center in Romania on Kies issues. They gave me 2 advices. To uninstall Kies and install it again with the antivirus swithched off.

The second advice was to install it on a PC with Windows XP (my laptop has Vista 32 on it). Apparently Kies is working on Windows XP.

Another info is on transferring Notes from Outlook to Fascinate. Kies cann't do that. Not even thought about it !!!! Stupid ! But the proposed solution is to search the Internet and find a software that converts Notes into gmail contacts and import them in this way. Does anybody know what software is this about ?

Have you tried to export the calendar from Outlook (including notes) to a file and import it in the gmail account ? This way the entire calendar will get transferred to the phone, including notes.

Samsung support was useless for me also (although it was the UK one). The also told me to check the firewall, the antivirus. The problem in my case was that they were insisting on such solutions although I told them very clearly that if I format the internal SD card and restart the phone it is connecting just fine. This was (in my opinion) clearly pointing towards a phone issue and not a PC issue.

However, these things are more or less to be expected. The biggest blow was this: I actually found out why I had the issues with the phone and I thought to tell them about it in the hope that they will pass it to technical department and fix them. You can see the reply I got below (pasted from the email I received from them - their reply comes first, my original message is at the end). They did not even read my message.

Thank you for contacting Samsung Electronics UK regarding your GT-I9000.
If you are suffering from a MTP error you will most likely need to

RE]Re]RE]Kies issues
Hi,

This is in relation to my previous messages (Customer Reference: 2104088154).

I have finally isolated the issue with the MTP Application restarting or hanging in the Initializing phase on the phone.

It seems the problem appears if there are too many mp3 files on the internal SD card (maybe other media types also but in my case it was mp3 files).

I have installed a language learning software (LangLearner Greek Lessons by LangLearner LLC, available on the market) which downloads few thousands of mp3 files on the internal SD card (for words and phrases in different languages). After deleting all the languages I was not interested about, I was left with about 800 mp3 files and it was still not working.
However, after I renamed those files to a different extension (some invalid extension so they are not identified as media files anymore) and restarted the phone, everything started working just fine. Just to confirm the issue, I renamed the files back to mp3 extension and the MTP Application again started not to work. Renamed back to invalid extension and restarted the phone and it is working fine now.

I am writing this message to you in the hope that you will pass it to the technical teams and they will identify and fix the issue with the MTP Application in a future firmware update.

Regards,
Daniel

Disconnect the phone from the PC, then start "Command Prompt" and in the console window type:

SET DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
DEVMGMT.MSC

This will open the Windows Device Manager, but with an extra twist: Check View->Show Hidden Devices and you will see all the devices you had ever connected to your PC which are not present anymore. Be prepared to find a whole lot of junk! Now be cautious about the Categories "Network Adapters", "Non-Plug and Play Drivers" and "Sound, video and game controllers", as they have some crucial devices which are never present, but must not be removed (such as "Microsoft TV/Video Connection", "RAS Async Adapter", "Fs_Rec", "RDPNP" and "vga"). In all other categories, you can usually remove all the nonpresent devices (as marked by the greyed out icons). Especially make sure you clean out any remnants under "Unknown Devices", "Modems", "Portable Devices" and "Universal Serial Bus Controllers". Cleaning out "Disk drives" and "Storage volumes" is also generally a good idea.

After you're done, go to Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs and uninstall Kies, then the "Samsung USB Drivers". Then reboot the machine, install Kies 1.5.1.10071_32, select not to run it, close the installer, open Device Manager, connect the phone and hold your fingers crossed...

Alright, so I tried the above. I must have removed ~30 components (only those that I was comfortable removing - again, I'm on my company laptop so I erred on the side of caution), uninstalled Kies and Samsung Drivers and reinstalled Kies, restarted Windows, opened Device Manager and connected the phone and selected "Samsung Kies" mode. Watched as a few items got installed, then it got stuck at installing MTP Device again. After a few minutes of waiting the same error message bubble popped up in the tray: "A problem occurred during installation. Your new hardware might not work properly". I expected this.

Ok nevermind I thought. I'm getting used to this by now. So I disconnected my phone, opened Kies and selected Driver Recovery. Waited until Drivers finished installing, then connected my phone, this time selecting "Mass storage" mode. I watched as a few items installed, and was glad that I could at least use mass storage.

I thought I'd give it one last go, but with Kies open this time. So I disconnected my phone, and re-connected it. Selected "Samsung Kies" again. Watched as Kies installed then other items again, then grappled with installing the MTP one more time: the status bar in the "Connecting device" window was vacillating furiously. I had Device Manager open as well. "MTP Device" appeared in D.Manager with the exclamation mark as usual... But ater a few seconds D.Manager appeared to refresh itself, once, twice, three times, then all of a sudden the exclamation mark was gone. However the name of the MTP Device remained as-is: it never changed to "GT I9000" like it was apparently supposed to. Also remaining was the tray bubble: "Found New Hardware. MTP Device".

Not that I cared, because magically, Kies appeared to recognise my phone at last. On the top right hand corner it displayed my device, and with a few quivering clicks of my mouse I could finally open my contact list! With sheer joy I saved a copy to PC. (I wondered if my colleagues heard me giggle like a schoolgirl.)

But alas, my happiness proved to be short-lived. While trying to see whether I could access or save a copy of my Notes, without warning my laptop screen suddenly turned a sickening shade of bright blue. It was the Blue Screen Of Death, telling me a physical dump of memory was commencing.

I think I almost cried.

I disconnected my phone, waited for my laptop to restart, then connected my phone and selected "Samsung Kies" again. Waited... Nope. Stuck at installing MTP Device. Disconnected and tried again. Still no go.

I re-did the whole process from the very top. Uninstalled all Samsung components in D.Manager. Uninstalled Kies (except for my precious contact list - or maybe I shouldn't have left it??), and uninstalled Samsung drivers. Reinstalled Kies and repeated everything I said here.

Nothing.

Now I'm too drained to try again. The optimist in me says to do it once more tomorrow...

In the meantime, what actually happened? Did I actually make some progress, or was it a fluke result?

Something evil happened, apparently. There must be something "bad" on this company laptop. It could be just a very poorly programmed driver, it could be some sort of "control" software your company has installed on it, or - in the worst case - there could be a trojan or virus on your laptop, hooked into the system to e.g. steal your passwords, credit card data or company secrets, and possibly trying to hook into the MTP device, but not actually being prepared to handle it, and thus crashing.

If your company has an IT department which takes care of maintenance, you could try going to them about the crash you encountered. If they have some specialists, those could even find out what caused it. And if it's indeed a virus or trojan, they really should take care of it ASAP.

After days on end of problems with trying to conect my phone with Kies, I finally found the answer. On my pc i wnt into  start  then wrote regedit. In there I deleated everything i found from  my past nokia N95 and from   my Samsung I8910 HD that had nothing to do with Kies.  After doing this I had a connection with Kies right away. Before my phone could not be found  or I could not  have the drivers installed correctly. Now everything works with no problem at all. I also deleted  things under MSCONFIG  before hand but that did not help  I hope this will be of some help to those who have problems with Kies.

Hey all,

got my Fascinate yesterday and found this forum while searching for solution for this problem.
Seems that everyone has had a bit different solution how they've got it to work, I thought I'd post mine since it turned out to be quite easy (don't know if I'm lucky or if it's a working solution for everyone)

First of all, I'm running the latest Kies (1.5.1.10074_2) and Win7 Pro x64. Had the same MTP installation problem each time I plugged my phone to the computer. How I got it to work finally was this:

1. Don't plug your phone to the computer yet.
2. Open Kies, from the settings turn off the options 'automatically start monitoring for device connection when Windows starts' and 'Start Kies automatically when device is connected'. For some reason the MTP installation failed each time Kies was open at the same time.
3. In Kies, click the Kies file menu on top of the application and select Driver recovery. Let it install the drivers, then reboot your computer.
4. Once rebooted, Kies shouldn't be running. Then plug your phone to the usb connection and select Samsung Kies mode.
5. Wait for the usb device to be detected and the drivers to be installed. Now the MTP installation shouldn't fail.
6. Start Kies and begin using your phone.

Hope this works for you guys too who've been having the same problem. Also, please comment and let us know if it worked for you.

Edit: Look here before you continue with my suggestion, see post by michaelames: http://www.samsungfascinateforum.com/samsung-fascinate-how-to/mtp-app-on-the-phone-keep-flashing-on-and-off/msg2151/

I saw this solution somewhere (maybe here!?) and it did work for me Happy

1. Backup youre media (Photos movies etc) Use bluetooth or USB, whatever works for you because all youre media will be erased. (Contacts, applications and sms will remain on phone. Some apps store data on sd-card though. Please dont blame me if you loose something important.
2. Press menu button and select "settings". Then go to "sd-card and phone memory"
3. Choose "uninstall sd-card" then "Format sd-card"
4. Restart youre phone

Before you connect it to the computer uninstall any previus versions of KIES and Samsung USB driver. Then install latest version of kies which you will find on samsung.com support pages.

Restart computer. Start Kies and let it load. Connect youre phone.

Thats it.

Im from sweden so ive got got swedish lang on my phone so mayby the menus and setting pages got other names than them i suggested above but im sure you will figure it out. Hope i can help someone out there.

Hi i have found the solution to this

when you install kies and plug in the phone the windows mtp driver box comes up you need to choose to install file from a folder by browsing for it, go to the location you installed the kies software then go to usb drivers open that folder and then choose 12.symbian-usb-download-driver click on ok and the driver will install and the fascinate will connect to the kies software.

This is from me and no one else so thanks would be nice.

Try to un-mount the sd card in the phone before connecting to kies. Worked for me.
Now I need to understand how to operate the calendar...

I used to have a problem that the PC couldn't recognized My AT&T captivate. After adapting a CareAce.net tip(reinstalling the USB driver), it was fixed.

Reinstalling Kies didn't solve my problem. Everything works fine in Windows (7 X86), but Kies won't recognise my phone. Using MassStorage does work alright.
What I did to connect it to Windows was downloading new drivers:
http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/MOBILES/Samsung/Samsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x86.shtml
http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/MOBILES/Samsung/Samsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x64.shtml
I think I trie Android-sync, because the only thing I want to do is sync with Outlook. For the other stuff I just use Windows Explorer.

What I did to connect it to Windows was downloading new drivers:

These drivers aren't new, the Samsung Fascinate drivers are in fact identical to the ones currently shipping with Kies. All dated May 25th, 2010, Version 5.02.02 (Remote NDIS driver) and 5.02.04 (other component drivers).

And in fact the driver packages offered for download there are all older than the one included in the current Kies version, which is V1.3.850.0 (but that doesn't make a difference in this case, as the Fascinate drivers haven't been updated since May). Also, the distinction between "x86" and "x64" makes no sense, as the driver packages always include both 32-bit and 64-bit drivers.

My advice regarding the driver still is (works on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows XP/Vista/7):

1. Download the latest Kies installer (V1.5.1.10074_2_6 as of this writing)
2. Install Kies
3. Go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the Samsung USB Driver for Mobile Phones
4. Use an UNZIP tool of your choice to extract  SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.exe.cab from the installer executable
5. Extract SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.exe from the extracted CAB archive
6. Run the driver installer you extracted with the following command-line options:

SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.exe -quiet -r -p:16

This will install only the 5 drivers you need for your Samsung Fascinate and omit the ~50 other drivers for various other phones which are also contained in the package.

After a couple of tries with samsung support I got this reply

Quote
Thank you for contacting Samsung Electronics regarding the GT-i9000. I am sorry to hear that you have issues using the handset with a PC and KIES.

KIES is not fully compatible with the handset, as the handset's Operating System is written by Google (as opposed to Bada, Samsung,Symbian and Windows OS which are). I regret that the message from KIESmay have misled you on this point.

As you have mentioned using Mass Storage mode, this is the means of data transfer for media files. Synching the handset for contacts and calendar, etc is done via your Google account.

The only real purpose for KIES is for Home Update when it becomes fully available.

If you require any further information, you mayfind this at www.samsung.com/uk or www.samsungmobile.com.
