A 5 inch screen could actually fit into a space 4.50 x 2.31inches (leaked Iphone 4g dimensions) or nearly a 5.5 inch screen could fit in the dimensions of a Samsung Fascinate. So why is a whole 1.5inches of phone real estate wasted??

I've been noticing many people becoming complacent and expecting that a screen can only fit inside a body in which there is a wide enough bezel. Seems fair right? Well I tell you not to accept it!

Time for some creativity and ingenuity:
I say make the screen of Gorilla Glass (like the Dell Streak) and put a 3-4mm rim around it. A 3mm rim around the screen is enough to fit some of the small screws used in cell phones.

Or even better make the whole front of the phone out of Gorilla Glass (the edges and corners would be thermoformed). The thermoformed Gorilla Glass can be cut at a 90 degree angle on the thermoformed edges, do the same with the back plate, but cut the angle in a lower position so that the front & back plate fit into each other then you can put screws into the top and bottom and even sides of the phone rather than from the back to the front and you eliminate needing any rim or bezel around the phone at all.

Considering the battery takes the most space and battery improvements continue to happen, the speed increases of processors continue (allowing us to under clock and save battery) and OS’s are optimized for battery consumption (well not Android apparently...) are all things happening now and in the future so devices can and will be smaller and expecting large screen sizes isn’t wrong.

It's all about supply and demand! Just because you are currently accepting of the current screen size to phone size ratios doesn't mean we shouldn't push manufacturers to produce better products in the same or smaller dimensions!

Thank you wsmith... I try *blushes* Sticking out tongue

Now some may not agree with having phones in which the entire front surface is a display as there is no room for buttons.  I have a few solutions for this...

First let me say that the Iphone has only one button on their front surface of the phone and they sell plenty... but either way with a full display on the front even that button is missing so how to fix this:

- Have software for having buttons on the bottom of the cell phone touchscreen. Preferably with the option to hide the "menu bar".  And the option to set it to hide automatically... similar to what you can do with in Windows XP, Vista, 7.. anytime you drag your finger (cursor) down to the bottom of the screen the menu (buttons) bar appears.

- Have a button on the side of the phone that you press when you want to see the menu bar come up.

- My preference would be to have a sensor on the mid to top left side of the phone.  This sensor works when your phone is unlocked of course as to save battery.. but by sliding your thumb over the sensor the menu bar would pop up for as long as your thumb is over the sensor or for a preset amount of time (say 3 secs).

- Have buttons on the back or side of the phone

- Have a touchscreen display on the back that can register input and your menu buttons would be on the bottom back side of the phone. There can be small groves in the touchscreen surface on the back as to help the fingers differentiate the buttons.

- Or once again a touchscreen display on the back but rather than groves, a transparent display and being able to adjust the transparency to see the programs (menu bar) running on the back screen, but through the front screen. Again by putting/swyping your thumb over a sensor.

There are ergonomic issues to consider that I am concerned that your solution does not address. The reason for discrete buttons is that the phone must at once be addressable while sleeping and must not accidentally be triggered while in a pocket.

That said, many of the buttons are actually capacitive touch surfaces. Cutting the bezel to a couple of mm (as with the side bezels of the Touch Pro that I currently use) would be a good thing and make for a larger screen.

Do you think people would have a tough time with gripping the device without touching the screen without a significant bezel on at least one side?

I think that if we're going to actually start designing phones, we should start with a set of functional requirements and work up from there. What do you think?
