Just read this tip on the Vodafone forum to speed up your phone and save battery power.

Go to settings
Then Location and Security
Switch off use GPS satallites

As simple as that............just turn it back on if you want to use GPS services.

Yes I know it may be a big inconvenience for some but as soon as I did it I noticed a huge difference in response and virtually no more lag, I've still to see how much battery it'll save but I've only just tried it.

Hopefully once froyo is released we wont have to resort to such trickery...............hopefully.

also just noticed my wi-fi signal has improved dramatically after switching off GPS...........I wonder if there is an internal resource sharing issue here?

An easier way to switch your GPS on/off is to download one of the many widgets from the Android Market that allow you to turn it on/off with one touch.  I use switchpro, it gives you the option to have one click options on all your important settings.

I never switch off my GPS,  Why?  The GPS does not use any power when its not in use.  If a GPS enabled application requests its resource it is turned on automatically.  See for yourself.. Enable the GPS power and note how the GPS icon does not appear in tray unless you have a gps enabled app open.  That said if you want to easily switch on/off the GPS reciever you can use the built-in android power control widget.

Toothandnail, go search this subject on any of the Android websites and I think you will find that GPS does run your battery down even when not in use.  I know for a fact that over a year ago when I started turning my GPS off my battery improved drastically.  If this wasn't true then all of these developers that have apps to turn off functions have wasted quite of bit of time.  Check out androidandme.com and androidcentral.com.

I have looked extensively at this, I also care about my battery life Wink Wink  The consensus is the difference between gps switched off and gps on w/o being in use is negligible.

I don't know if you guys have a different Samsung, but if you pull down the notification window you can toggle the gps on or off.

I think you can only toggle it with the drop down menu on android 2.2

I see what your saying about GPS only being in the notification bar when in use, but Im sure I read somewhere that it checks your location in the background every now and again without showing up.

Hi All

Well my battery is driving me insane 8 hours since unplugged last night had 92% battery woke up this morning and got 69% battery.  I didnt even use my phone in the night, so now its on charge again this morning with 69% I have to charge it because I am out all day and I know that battery wont last.
I mean I only charged it yesterday but what choice do I have, when you switch ur phone to silent on the night is there anything about a sleep mode cus I aint sure or does this mean it goes into sleep mode.

@shell, that is really odd. do you get tons of messages or something at night? Becasuse maybe, just maybe that is draining it, but you would need to get A-LOT of messages for that the happen.

@alan that is pretty nifty actually but are there and repercussions to turning the GPS off, like what does it take away on the phone?

This is exactly what I was talking about above.  Your phone is a computer and it has things that run all the time including GPS.  In order for you to conserve battery you need to deactivate some of your different systems while you are not using them.  For example, while I'm out running around on 3G, I turn off auto-sync.  Why?  To conserve battery.  I have been tinkering for over a 1 1/2 years now with my Android phones.  It can last me through the day with heavy internet, email, and texting.  You just need to be conservative with things you don't need.  Obviously, while emailing I do turn auto-sync on/off occasionally to update my phone.  All you need to do is play with your phone for awhile and see what will get you through the day if you don't have the ability to charge it.  You could also invest in another battery so you wouldn't have to worry about anything.  Do some research on the massives amounts of information out there.  There are many good Android sites that can answer any question you may have.

Battery still at 68% after aprox 11 hours since last charge, shot about 10 mins of HD video, played a game for about 1/2 hour, checked facebook a couple of times, light use I know but seems quite good with GPS off, usually I'm down to about 30% by this time.

I keep auto updates off unless connected to WI-FI.
Also have screen brightness set to auto, and screen time out set to 2 mins, always switch screen off after use.

Like the other posts suggest, just play about and experiment with different settings, see what works best for you.

I dont know what to do for the best if you was in my position what would you do, my battery was charged last night to full and its now on 32%.  When I wake in the morning I dont have any text messages but then obviously even though its on silent its still running.
What do you advise me to do?
I do go on the net on it but not all the time.
But then when I am my breaks at work I do check it then

Double check you dont have any auto updates switched on i.e. facebook, e-mail, news apps.

If all looks ok then it could be a duff battery.

I read on some other forum that if you contact samsung about it they will send you another battery free of charge with no questions asked..........prob because there might be a known problem with them and they want to keep customers happy.

Might even try it myself just to get a spare one.
