LAS VEGAS—At the CTIA trade show this year, everybody seems to have an Android smartphone—and everyone's Android smartphone has a special thing. Kyocera's Zio is inexpensive. HTC's Evo 4G is super-powered. And Samsung's Fascinate is bright, thin, and it may end up everywhere.
Handling the Fascinate, three things struck me immediately: it's smooth and thin (at 9.9 mm, the thinnest Android smartphone out there), and it's really bright. The Fascinate uses a 4-inch model of Samsung's new "super AMOLED" display, which reduces the number of layers in an OLED display from three to two to slash reflectivity by 80 percent. The result is a bright, colorful screen that should be more visible outdoors than the last-generation OLEDs on devices like the Google Nexus One.
